Make nectar from plain white sugar and water with no dye, and change it every 2 to 3 days in hot weather.

Keeping squirrels off

Mount feeders on a pole at least 5 ft high and 8 to 10 ft from anything a squirrel can jump from. Add a baffle below the feeder. Weight-activated feeders close the ports under a squirrel's weight.

Hygiene

Clean feeders and bird baths every one to two weeks with a weak bleach solution (about 1 part to 9 parts water), rinse well and let them dry. Rake up spilled hulls to keep rodents away.

Bird houses

Entrance-hole size decides who moves in: about 1-1/8 inch for wrens and chickadees, 1-1/2 inch for eastern bluebirds. Choose houses with ventilation, drainage and a side or front panel that opens for cleaning.
