Where to find the numbers

Mowers and tractors have a label on the deck or frame with the model and serial number. Engines carry their own model number, stamped on the engine shroud or valve cover (Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Honda and Kawasaki all do this). Belts and blades are often stamped with their own part numbers. Searching by that number is the most reliable way to find a match.

Common repairs by symptom

Trimmer line will not advanceSpool, spring or trimmer head
Flat or cracked tiresWheels and flat-free tires

Blades: length, center hole, lift

A replacement blade must match length, center-hole shape and size, and the deck it was made for. High-lift blades bag better and mulching blades chop finer; neither fixes a dull edge. Sharpen every 20 to 25 hours of mowing and check balance after each sharpening.

Trimmer line

Use the line diameter your head is rated for (commonly 0.065, 0.080 or 0.095 inch). Thicker line cuts heavier weeds but strains small electric trimmers and wears the head faster.

Fuel

Most carburetor problems come from old fuel. Use fresh gasoline, add stabilizer if it will sit more than 30 days, and run small engines dry before winter storage.
