Test at least weekly, and after heavy use or rain. Adjust alkalinity first, then pH, then sanitizer. See pool chemicals and test kits.

Filters

Cartridge filters are rated in square feet, and a replacement must match the length, diameter and center-hole size of the original. Sand filters need new sand every 5 to 7 years; filter balls are a lighter alternative for many above ground systems. Clean or backwash when pressure rises 8 to 10 psi above the clean reading. Pumps

Size a pump to turn over the full pool volume in about 8 hours and to stay within the filter's rated flow. A bigger pump is not better if it overruns the filter. Variable-speed pumps cost more up front and much less to run. See pumps and circulation.

Salt cells

A salt cell turns dissolved salt into chlorine and wears out over time, typically after 3 to 7 seasons. Replacement cells are made for specific systems (for example Hayward, Jandy TruClear or Pentair IntelliChlor), so match the model printed on the cell. See pool and spa replacement parts.
