Test strips are fine for a weekly check; a drop-based kit is worth owning for when something is actually wrong, because strips drift badly once the tube has been opened a season.

Follow the label for dosing and for the wait time between additions, never mix concentrated pool chemicals in the same container or scoop, and add chemical to water rather than water to chemical. Always read and follow the product label.
