Grill and outdoor cooking buying guide

Replacing a part? Find the model number first

Every gas grill has a data plate with the model number, usually inside the cabinet door, on the back panel or under the side shelf. Burners, heat plates, grates and igniters are sized to that model, not to the brand. A "4-burner" grill from one year can use different burner lengths from the same brand's 4-burner a year later.

Grates: cast iron, porcelain or stainless

Cast iron holds heat and leaves the best sear marks, but it rusts if it is not kept oiled. Porcelain-coated grates are easy to clean until the coating chips. Stainless steel (304 grade) is the low-maintenance choice and the most common replacement material.

Low flame? Reset the regulator before buying one

Propane regulators have a safety device that cuts flow if a valve is open when the tank is turned on. Turn off all burners and the tank, disconnect for a minute, reconnect, open the tank slowly, then light. If the flame is still low, replace the regulator and hose together.

Griddles and flat tops

Griddle inserts turn a gas grill into a flat top and are cut to fit specific grill families such as the Weber Spirit or Genesis. Standalone griddles are measured by cooking width (17, 22, 28 or 36 inches); replacement tops and hoods must match that width.

Covers

Measure the grill's width, depth and height with the side shelves up, then add 2 to 4 inches. A cover that is too tight tears at the corners; one that is too loose catches the wind. See grill covers.
