Slow-release granular feeds over weeks and is hard to overdo; liquid feed acts within days and is what you use to correct a visible deficiency. Both are guesses without a soil test, and a $15 test will often tell you that you do not need phosphorus at all.

Follow the label rate for the area you are treating — more is not better, and excess nitrogen produces soft growth that pests find first. Always read and follow the product label.
