Autumn is bulb season for spring bloomers. Tulips, daffodils, alliums and crocus go in once the soil has cooled but well before it freezes, planted around three times as deep as the bulb is tall, pointed end up.

For seed, check whether a variety needs cold stratification — many native perennials and some poppies simply will not germinate without weeks of cold and damp first, which is why a spring sowing of them so often does nothing.
