Timing is set by grass type, not by the calendar on the bag. Cool-season grasses — tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass — go down in late summer and early autumn, when soil is warm and weed competition is falling. Warm-season grasses such as bermuda and zoysia go down in late spring once soil holds above 65°F.

Seeding rate differs sharply between a new lawn and an overseed, usually by about half — read the bag rate per thousand square feet and measure the area rather than guessing.

New seed needs the surface kept damp with light frequent watering until germination, then progressively less and deeper. That is the step most failed seedings skip.
