Vertical space is the cheapest square footage a small garden has. Hanging baskets, deck rail planters, window boxes and wall-mounted panels all put plants where there is no floor to give up.

Weight is the constraint nobody checks. A 14 inch hanging basket, watered, runs 25 to 30 pounds — so what the hook is screwed into matters more than the hook. Window box brackets should be rated well above the loaded weight and fixed into framing, not siding alone.

Rail planters are sized to rail width, typically a nominal 2x4 or 2x6 top rail. Measure yours, and remember that anything hanging in wind and full sun dries out roughly twice as fast as a pot on the ground.
