The most common plumbing mistake in a garden is assuming garden hose thread and pipe thread are the same. US garden hose thread is 3/4 inch GHT at 11.5 threads per inch with a straight profile that seals on a washer; 3/4 inch NPT is a tapered pipe thread that seals on the thread itself. They look almost identical and will not seal on each other — you need a GHT-to-NPT adapter.

Brass fittings outlast plastic at the spigot and at the nozzle, which are the two places that get cranked on and dropped. Quick-connect sets are worth it if you swap tools often, but stay with one system, because brands are not cross-compatible.

Most leaks at a coupling are a perished rubber washer, not a failed fitting. Keep a bag of them.
