Drainage first, material second. A pot with no hole is a bathtub, and the fastest way to kill a healthy plant is to leave it standing in the water its own roots displaced.

Material changes how often you water. Unglazed terracotta breathes and dries fast, which suits herbs and succulents; glazed ceramic, resin and fibreglass hold moisture longer and survive freeze-thaw far better, which matters if pots stay outside all winter.

Size up gradually — moving a plant into a pot several sizes larger leaves wet soil the roots cannot reach. One or two inches of extra diameter per repot is plenty.
