Shade cloth is sold by the percentage of light it blocks, and picking the right number matters more than picking the right colour. Roughly 30 to 40 per cent for hardening off seedlings and shading heat-sensitive vegetables, 50 to 60 per cent for most greenhouse and raised-bed use, and 70 per cent or more over seating, kennels and hot southern beds.

Knitted polyethylene cloth will not fray when you cut it and is the easier material to work with; woven cloth blocks more light per weight but needs its edges hemmed or taped.

Reinforced hems with brass grommets on roughly one to three foot centres are what keep a panel from tearing out at the corner in wind. Leave a little slack rather than stretching it drum-tight.
