A shade sail only performs if it is tensioned and pitched. Flat, slack sails pool water and flog in wind; a sail with a slope of at least twenty degrees between its high and low corners sheds rain and stays quiet.

Plan the hardware before the fabric. Turnbuckles, D-rings, snap hooks and pad eyes add roughly fifteen to twenty per cent to the span, so a 12 foot sail generally wants 14 to 16 feet between anchor points.

Anchor into structure — a post set in concrete below the frost line, a wall plate into framing, not into fascia board. Take sails down before a storm; the loads a tensioned sail transmits to its anchors in high wind are considerable.
