Most people buy a garden hose by length and regret it by diameter. A 100 ft hose sounds like freedom until you discover that a 1/2 in wall loses so much pressure over that distance that your sprinkler barely turns. Diameter, not length, is what determines how much water arrives at the nozzle — and the gap between sizes is much larger than the numbers suggest.
At 50 psi supply, a 50 ft hose delivers roughly 9 gallons per minute at 5/8 in, about 5 GPM at 1/2 in, and around 17 GPM at 3/4 in. Double the length and each of those figures drops by roughly a third. That is the whole physics of hose buying, and it maps cleanly onto yard size.

A 100 ft 3/4 in hose full of water weighs close to 40 pounds. If nobody in the household wants to drag that, the better answer is a shorter 5/8 in hose plus a permanent drip run to the far bed — see drip irrigation.
The five specifications that matter
- Diameter. Decided above. Never mix a 3/4 in supply into a 1/2 in extension — you throw away the flow you paid for at the joint.
- Burst pressure. Look for at least 350 psi, and 500 psi if you leave the hose pressurized with the spigot open. Municipal water hammer routinely spikes well above static pressure.
- Couplings. Cast brass outlasts everything. Stamped brass rounds off when you tighten it with pliers. Plastic couplings are for hoses you expect to replace in two seasons. This is the single most common failure point on any hose.
- Wall construction. Reinforced rubber or a multi-layer hybrid polymer resists kinking; single-layer vinyl kinks the first time you pull it around a corner and holds a memory of that kink forever.
- Drinking-water safety. If anyone fills a pet bowl or a kid fills a water balloon from it, buy a hose labeled safe for potable water. Standard garden hoses are not.
Test what you already have in three minutes
Before replacing a hose, find out whether the hose is the problem. Put a 5 gallon bucket under the open spigot and time the fill. Then connect the hose, run it out to full length and time the fill again from the hose end. If the second time is more than about 40 percent longer, the hose is the bottleneck — either the diameter is too small, the length is too long, or there is a kink or a partly closed shut-off valve in the line.
If the two times are close and your sprinkler still underperforms, the problem is upstream: a clogged spigot screen, a failing pressure regulator or a nozzle sized for more flow than the house provides. Swapping nozzles is cheap; hose fittings and nozzles covers quick-connects, shut-offs and screen washers that fix most of these.
Storage decides how long it lasts
Hoses almost never fail from use. They fail from being left in the sun, coiled tight around a sharp bracket, or full of water in a freeze. Drain the hose before storing it, coil it in loops at least 12 inches across, and keep it off hot concrete. A reel does all three at once — see watering cans and hose reels. Common questions
Is a 3/4 in hose always better?
No. Under 50 feet it delivers more water than most nozzles and sprinklers can use, while costing more and weighing considerably more. It pays for itself only over long runs or when you are filling something large.
Are expandable hoses worth it?
For light patio watering with a wand, yes — they store in almost no space. They are a poor match for sprinklers and pressure washers, because the inner tube restricts flow and the fabric sleeve abrades on rough paving.
Can I join two hoses without losing pressure?
You will lose a little at every coupling, but the loss is small if both hoses are the same diameter and the connection is clean brass with a good washer. Joining a 5/8 in to a 1/2 in hose costs far more than the coupling itself does.
Why does my hose kink in the same spot every time?
The wall has taken a permanent set. You cannot reverse it. Cut out the damaged section and fit a repair coupling, or replace the hose and store the new one on a reel.
How often should a hose be replaced?
A good reinforced hose that is drained and stored properly lasts 8 to 10 seasons. A vinyl hose left outdoors year-round typically fails in 2 to 3. Storage matters far more than price.
