Mower Deck Belt Sizing: Getting the Right Belt for a 42, 46 or 48 Inch Deck

Short answer: deck width does not determine the belt. A 42" deck may use three or four different belts across model years, because the belt length is set by the pulley layout, not the cutting width. Order off the model and serial number on the deck or frame plate, and confirm with two measurements: the belt’s outside length and its top width.

Why the same deck size takes different belts

Manufacturers redesign spindle spacing, idler position and tensioner geometry between production runs while keeping the deck width the same for marketing continuity. Two 46" decks built three years apart can differ by several inches of belt length. On top of that, the same physical belt is sold under an OEM number, an aftermarket equivalent number and a generic industrial size — three numbers for one part.

The practical consequence: never order a mower belt from a search for "42 inch deck belt". Find the plate.

Photograph the plate before you order. Serial ranges matter: many parts lists split a single model into "before serial 0301xxxxx" and "after".

Belt section codes: what the letters mean

If you have the old belt in your hand, its cross-section tells you which family it belongs to. These are industry-standard dimensions and they do not vary by brand.

Two rules follow from this table. First, a 4L belt is measured on its outside circumference; an A-section belt is measured on its inside or effective length — a "4L920" is 92.0" outside, while an "A90" is roughly 92" outside. Mixing the two conventions is how people end up two inches short. Second, if your belt has V-shaped teeth on both faces, it is a double-V (hex) belt and a single-V replacement will slip on the back-side idler.

How to measure a belt that has already stretched

A failed belt is longer than it was new, so measuring the old belt gives you a number that is too big. Two better methods:

  1. String the deck. With the belt off, run a length of non-stretch cord around every pulley in the exact path the belt takes, including the idlers and the correct side of each one. Pull the tensioner to its normal running position, mark the cord, lay it flat and measure. That is your effective length.
  2. Measure the old belt and subtract. Lay the old belt flat and pull it into a circle without stretching. Measure the outside circumference. A worn belt typically reads 1–2% long, so cross-check the result against the parts list rather than ordering straight from it.

Also measure the top width with calipers while you are there. Width mismatches are more damaging than a small length error — a narrow belt rides down into the pulley groove and burns.

Signs it is the belt, and signs it is not

  • Belt: blades slow under load, squeal on engagement, burn smell, glazed shiny belt sides, cracks in the belt back, visible slack with the PTO engaged.
  • Not the belt: a seized spindle bearing (spin each spindle by hand — it should turn freely and silently), a frozen idler pulley, a stretched or unhooked tensioner spring, or a bent deck bracket. Fitting a new belt onto a seized idler will destroy the new belt in minutes.
  • Always check the belt keepers and guides while the belt is off. A bent keeper throws belts repeatedly and no replacement belt will fix it.

Quick answers

Can I use a generic 4L belt instead of the OEM number? Often yes, if the length, section and construction match. Kevlar/aramid-reinforced belts hold up better on decks with back-side idlers and tight bends.

Why did my new belt fail in one season? Usually a worn idler bearing, a weak tensioner spring, or a belt one size short being run over-tight.

Do I need to replace blades at the same time? Not necessarily, but a deck that is apart is the cheapest time to do it. Match blade length and centre-hole pattern (round, star, or 5-point) to your deck.

Is deck width ever enough on its own? Only on a few single-generation models. Treat it as a filter, not an answer.
