Measure the set, not the space it sits in. Width at the widest point, depth front-to-back and height with cushions in place, then add a couple of inches so the cover slides on without you dragging it over the arms every time.

The failure mode to design against is pooling. Water standing in the middle of a flat cover stretches seams and eventually finds them, so look for a peaked or domed shape, a support pole, or a cover cut with a pitched top.

Air vents cut the condensation that grows mildew underneath, and a click-close strap or elasticated hem keeps the whole thing on the furniture rather than in the neighbour's yard after the first real gust.
