Measure the rail first. Most rail planters are built for a nominal 2x4 or 2x6 top rail, and a wet 12-inch pot runs 20 pounds or more — worth knowing before you hang five of them off one side.

Fabric grow bags are the most forgiving container for a hot balcony because they air-prune roots and shed heat, but they dry out faster than plastic, so plan on daily watering in midsummer.
