A working system is four things: mainline tubing, emitters rated in gallons per hour, a pressure regulator — usually 25 PSI for standard drip — and a filter. The regulator and the filter are the two parts people skip, and they are exactly why emitters blow off or clog a month later.

Plan emitter count by plant size rather than by spacing: one 1 GPH emitter for a small perennial, two to four for a shrub, and a ring of them around anything with a wide root plate.
