Cold Plunge Water Care: Chlorine, Ozone and UV, and How Often to Drain

Short answer: a cold plunge is a small volume of water with a very high bather load and almost no chemical activity from the cold, which is a harder water-care problem than a hot tub, not an easier one. Ozone and UV-C treat water only as it passes through the unit — they leave nothing behind in the tub. A residual sanitiser (chlorine or bromine) is what protects the water between passes. Most manufacturers therefore pair a residual sanitiser with filtration and circulation, and use ozone or UV as a supplement that reduces how much sanitiser you need.

Why cold water is harder, not easier

Three things work against you. Volume is small, often 60 to 150 gallons, so anything introduced is concentrated rather than diluted. Bather load per gallon is extremely high compared with a pool. And cold slows chemical reaction rates, which means a sanitiser that acts quickly at 100°F acts much more slowly at 45°F. On the other side of the ledger, cold also slows biological growth — but slower is not stopped, and biofilm establishes happily in cold plumbing.

The single biggest contributor to water problems is what goes in on skin: body oils, sweat, sunscreen, lotion and hair product. A rinse before entry removes more contamination than any chemical you can add afterwards.

The pattern is clear once you see it laid out: ozone, UV and filtration are all pass-through technologies. They handle the water that reaches them. Only a residual sanitiser is present in the tub while someone is in it.

A practical maintenance routine

  1. Rinse before every entry. The cheapest water-care step there is.
  2. Test regularly with strips or a kit appropriate to your sanitiser, and follow the target ranges in your tub manual. Test more often when usage rises.
  3. Run circulation daily. Ozone and UV only do anything while water is moving; a plunge left stagnant for days is the classic route to cloudy water.
  4. Rinse the cartridge weekly, deep-clean it monthly. Cartridge filters trap oils that a hose rinse will not shift; a proper soak restores flow.
  5. Keep it covered. A cover keeps out debris, pollen, insects and sunlight, and holds temperature so the chiller works less.
  6. Wipe the waterline. Body oils accumulate as a ring that no chemical removes.
  7. Watch pH. Sanitisers behave differently outside their working pH band, and drifting pH is a common cause of "the chlorine is not doing anything".

What actually drives the drain interval

There is no universal number, and any source giving you one without asking questions is guessing. The interval is driven by four things:

The signal that it is time regardless of schedule: water that will not hold a sanitiser reading, foams persistently, stays cloudy after a clean filter and correct chemistry, or smells off. At that point you are fighting dissolved load, and only a drain and refill resets it. Drain the plumbing too, not just the tub — residual water in lines is where biofilm survives a refill.

Chillers, and why they change the maths

An insulated tub with a chiller and a filtration loop is a closed, circulating system, which makes water care much more manageable than an uninsulated tub topped up with ice. Ice tubs get fresh dilution every time, but they also get whatever was on the ice and they rarely circulate. If you are running an ice-and-tub setup, plan on shorter intervals and expect to drain more often.

Quick answers

Can ozone replace chlorine entirely? No. Ozone is not present in the tub, so it cannot protect water at the moment of use. Manufacturers position it as supplementary.

Is UV better than ozone? They are different, not ranked. UV has no by-products and simple maintenance; ozone is a stronger oxidiser. Neither leaves a residual.

Why is my cold plunge cloudy when the chemistry reads fine? Same answer as in pools: that is a filtration and circulation problem, not a chemistry problem. Clean or replace the cartridge and confirm the pump is actually moving water.

Do I need a different test kit than for a hot tub? The tests are the same; what changes is how fast readings move. Test more often, especially after use.

Can I use pool chlorine tablets? Only if your manufacturer says so. Trichlor tablets are strongly acidic and add stabiliser, and many small-volume tubs are not designed around them.
