Hose Timers and Smart Controllers: How to Choose and Program One

A watering timer is the cheapest reliability upgrade in a garden. Plants do not suffer because you water badly — they suffer because you water inconsistently, then overcorrect. A timer removes the inconsistency, and the good ones remove the overcorrection too by skipping cycles when it rains.

The catch is that timers are sold on features and bought on frustration. A Wi-Fi controller that cannot hold a signal at the far side of the house is worse than a mechanical dial that always works. Start with where the spigot is, then pick the technology.

Note the fail-closed row. It is the most common cause of a dead vegetable bed in August — the timer stopped working three weeks earlier and nobody noticed. Change the batteries every spring on a fixed date rather than waiting for a warning.

Build a schedule in four steps

  1. Find out how much water your system puts out. For drip, add up emitter ratings: twenty 1 GPH emitters is 20 gallons per hour. For sprinklers, set three straight-sided cans in the spray pattern, run for 20 minutes and measure the average depth in inches, then multiply by three to get inches per hour.
  2. Set a depth target, not a time target. Most established beds want about 1 inch of water per week in summer, delivered in one or two soakings. Divide your target by the output rate from step one to get run time.
  3. Water early. Between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. loses the least to evaporation and gives foliage time to dry, which reduces fungal problems. Evening watering keeps leaves wet overnight and is the worst option for most plants.
  4. Verify with a screwdriver. One hour after a cycle, push a long screwdriver into the bed. It should slide in easily to 6 to 8 inches. If it stops at 3, run longer and less often — not more often.

Containers break these rules. A 12 inch pot in full sun in July can need water daily regardless of what the schedule says, because the root zone is small and the sides heat up. Installing it so it does not leak

Order at the spigot is backflow preventer, then timer, then filter, then pressure regulator, then the line. Hand-tighten only: the plastic threads on most timers strip if you put a wrench on them, and the rubber washer does the sealing anyway. Check that the washer is seated and not doubled up — two washers stacked is the reason for most drips at the spigot.

Give the timer some shade if you can. Direct afternoon sun cooks the LCD, shortens battery life and makes the display unreadable exactly when you want to change something. Anything from shade and cooling works, or simply mount it on the north side of the fixture.

Common questions

Will a timer work on well water or a rain barrel?

Well water usually works fine. Rain barrels often do not — most solenoid timers need a minimum of about 10 psi to open, and a barrel on a stand delivers under 5. Look for a timer explicitly rated for low or zero pressure, or use a small pump. See rain barrels and water harvesting.

Do I need a smart controller if I am home all summer?

Not really. The value of weather skip is highest when you travel or when your region gets unpredictable summer storms. A two-outlet digital timer covers most home gardens for a fraction of the price.

Can one timer run two zones on different schedules?

Only if it has two independently programmable outlets. A single-outlet timer with a Y-splitter runs both zones on the same schedule, which defeats the point of separating them.

What do I do with the timer over winter?

Remove it, take out the batteries, drain it and store it indoors. Freezing water inside the valve body cracks the housing, and a corroded battery contact is the other common spring failure. Add it to the list in winterize your yard.

My timer runs but no water comes out. Why?

In order of likelihood: dead batteries, a clogged inlet filter screen, a closed spigot behind the timer, or a pressure regulator installed backwards. Check all four before assuming the valve has failed.
